The 60th anniversary of USSR national football team’s victory at the first European football championship was marked on Friday, the 10th of July.
Russia national football team coach Stanislav Cherchesov attended commemorative celebrations in Sochi and provided the following comments:
The whole world knows such legendary names as Yashin, Ponedelnik, Metreveli and others. They have entered their names into the history of our nation and international football by winning the European Championship of 1960. Lev Yashin’s Ballon d'Or from 1963 is now exhibited at the South Sport Museum of Olympic Fame as a testimony to achievements of this legendary goalkeeper. He remains the only goalkeeper to hold the award. Russia national team is now an automatic successor of the USSR national team. We keep remembering the history of football players and managers who won the European championship 60 years ago.
