Akhmat to face Fakel in away Russian Cup clash

Akhmat will face Fakel on Tuesday, 27 October, in Matchday 5 of the Russian Cup RPL Path group stage.

The match will be played at Fakel Stadium in Voronezh. Kick-off is at 16:00 CET.

Today’s fixture will be Stanislav Cherchesov’s fourth match against Fakel. His record in the previous three meetings stands at one win and two draws, with two goals scored and one conceded. - Obviously, I’m disappointed — we lost. We had discussed how we wanted to approach this match, but I didn’t see that reflected in our first-half performance. That suggests the players hadn’t fully taken on board what we were asking of them. We changed things in the second half, but unfortunately, in games like this, it can be too late to turn things around. We kept pushing and created chances, and the substitutions gave us a boost.

Akhmat suffered a narrow 3–2 defeat to Zenit at Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg in Round 11 of the Russian Premier League.

Lechi Sadulaev put Akhmat ahead in the 25th minute, but the hosts drew level two minutes after the break when Maksim Glushenkov’s shot hit the post and ricocheted into the net off visiting defender Arsen Adamov.

Glushenkov gave Zenit the lead in the 62nd minute before Mohamed Konate equalised for Akhmat in the 86th. However, John John struck in the 90th minute to seal victory for the hosts.

Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov spoke to the media at the post-match press conference:

— How we tried to contain Glushenkov? First of all, we were playing against Zenit, who happen to have a player called Glushenkov—a very good player, too. Of course, he is difficult to contain. He scored, so we clearly could have done better somewhere. But with players of a certain calibre, sometimes there is simply nothing you can do. Maksim played well, particularly in the second half, and that made the difference for Zenit.

— Sidibe nearly became involved in a scuffle with Sobolev towards the end. What prompted that flash of aggression?

— Sometimes, as a coach, I have to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear: I saw nothing and heard nothing. But since you have asked, let’s look at that last incident. Our player gets to the ball first in an aerial challenge, and their player crashes into his head. How is that a 50–50 challenge? Am I supposed to know nothing about football? Our player heads the ball, and the other player hits him in the head. How is that a 50–50? Our player wins the ball. A 50–50 is when both players have a chance of getting to it. That is why these things happen. If the referee had awarded a free-kick, none of this would have happened. But he didn’t. Instead, he took the easy option and booked me. That is how these situations develop. They wind everyone up, then don’t know how to calm things down.

The upcoming match against Zenit will mark Stanislav Cherchesov’s 100th game in charge of Akhmat Grozny.

Cherchesov is currently in his second spell at the club. He first took charge in September 2011, when the team was known as Terek, and stayed until the end of the 2012/13 season. Under his leadership, the team finished eighth that season, remaining in contention for European qualification until the final rounds.

Cherchesov returned to Grozny in August 2025, signing a three-year contract. Fittingly, his first game back was also against Zenit, with Akhmat securing a 1–0 victory at Akhmat Arena on 9 August 2025.

Visiting midfielder Viktor Okishor opened the scoring just before half-time. Egas Kasintura equalised in stoppage time, only for striker Yaroslav Gladyshev to restore Dynamo’s lead two minutes later.

— The first half was evenly balanced. Dynamo may have controlled possession better at times, but they weren’t creating chances. We made some adjustments in the second half and improved our play, while the substitutions also helped. I’m pleased with our second-half performance and thanked the players for their character, but we have to see games through to the final whistle.

— What stopped you from playing like that in the first half?

— That’s football. Against Baltika, we started on the front foot, but then they took control of possession and stopped us from playing our game. You have to take the opposition into account: sometimes they let you start that way, and sometimes they don’t. If we’d started the first half half-asleep, we would have conceded another goal and gone into the break more than 1–0 down. I disagree with the suggestion that the team didn’t want to play. Our opponents simply didn’t allow us to play our game in the first half, even though they weren’t creating chances themselves. In the second half, we came out fired up, seized the initiative, forced them into mistakes and scored a superb goal.

Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov answered journalists’ questions at the post-match press conference:

— My assessment is simple: this was the kind of match we prepared for. Our games against Baltika always follow a similar pattern. Last year’s home meeting also ended in a draw, with both teams fighting for every inch of the pitch. Our opponents deserve credit for that, and for staying fully focused throughout. Of course, we wanted to win and put together several promising attacks, but they also posed a threat on the break. I think the result was fair. Now we turn our attention to the cup match against Dynamo.

— How is Maksim Samorodov, who picked up an injury while on international duty with Kazakhstan?

— He should not have played for the national team with that injury, but my colleague saw it differently. Playing made the injury worse. Our job now is to get him back to fitness, and I hope our medical staff can do that. He had an MRI scan yesterday, which showed that the muscle had not healed. I do not know how he managed to play the full 90 minutes for Kazakhstan on an artificial pitch. I would like my colleagues at the national team to exercise better judgement in situations like this. Melkadze will be available for the next match after missing this one. I encourage everyone to come along to our cup match against Dynamo — it will be a different game.

— How much did the international break affect the quality of the team’s football?

— The condition of the pitch had more of an impact — the ball kept bobbling. The second pitch will be ready soon, and the stadium director is doing everything he can to keep it in good condition. Once we switch pitches, we will be better able to assess the quality of our football. When an international break lasts three weeks, the players settle into different routines with their national teams. But we managed to get them focused on league football again, and they deserve credit for that. I did not expect a different type of game, because our opponents always fight for every inch of the pitch.

— What do you think about the international break lasting three weeks?

— Like other clubs, we had players return from international duty with injuries. But injuries are part of football. I spent six years coaching Russia and a year and a half coaching Kazakhstan, so I know that the national teams have a job to do as well. Club coaches are not consulted when a break like this is introduced. If those are the regulations, we follow them.

Our club’s management deserves credit for providing us with excellent conditions. We went to Turkey for nine days and had a productive training camp. Naturally, we did far more training than the players who were away on international duty. Some of those players got good work in, while others struggled because they lacked match rhythm. Still, the lads did well to refocus. Of course, certain decisions are easier to make when the whole squad is together. We will see what comes next — perhaps they will start calling players up for three months, like university students being sent away for military training (smiles).

- We struggled to get into the game, although we did score a goal that was disallowed. Our opponents were more aggressive and showed greater intensity in the first half, but we also had chances that we failed to take. When you are not ready for something, it is difficult to put it right during the game. We kept it at 1–0 until late on and switched to two up front with ten minutes remaining. But when you leave yourself exposed at the back, the opposition will take advantage. We made that change late in the game rather than midway through, to avoid making things more difficult for ourselves.”

- What needs to improve during the international break?

- We lacked intensity in the first half both in Voronezh and here. We lacked a spark, although we played as a team, created chances and won the ball through our pressing. But when you lack intensity and then have a player sent off… Today was not our day, although we have to make sure every match is our day.”

— The match unfolded much as we had expected because we knew how our opponents would play. However, we lacked the necessary aggression and pace. In this league, you have to be more aggressive and put your opponents under enough pressure to force them into mistakes. We made changes in the second half to bring on some fresh legs, and the game changed. When a team are fully focused and determined, they can overcome any challenge. Unfortunately, we had to come from behind twice today, but we showed character and ultimately secured the win. We executed our game plan, aside from conceding those two goals. As I have said before, this team are playing a completely different style of football from last season. The next step is to improve defensively.

— How much did Dynamo’s enforced first-half change of goalkeeper contribute to Akhmat’s goals?

— We worked on set pieces throughout the week, giving the players specific instructions and rehearsing various routines. We scored some very good goals, and I do not think the change of goalkeeper had any bearing on them. Dynamo have two very capable goalkeepers. Of course, having to make that substitution was probably not ideal for my opposite number.

— What kind of emotional impact will a victory like this have on the dressing room?

— Every victory has an impact. I have been involved in so many matches that, important as this win was, I still see it as just one of 30 league games. We have another 22 matches ahead of us. We should be pleased with the performance, analyse the aspects we were unhappy with and then continue moving forward.

— How conscious were the players of the importance of this Caucasus derby?

— We spoke to the players about it. However, when I played and coached in Germany and Austria, people would tell me about the importance of certain derbies, but I had no personal connection to those rivalries. Sidibé, for example, might understand the rivalry between Paris and Marseille, but not necessarily the one between Grozny and Makhachkala.

— What would you like to say to the supporters after such an exciting victory?

— I always tell them, ‘Come to the stadium.’ I have yet to see the stands full. We scored three goals against Krylya Sovetov and four against Rostov, so we are doing our best to entertain our supporters. At the same time, we would love to see more of them in the stands. The twelfth man can help a team turn matches around and secure victories. We are showing through our actions, not just our words, how much we want to see more supporters at the stadium.

Akhmat will host Dynamo Makhachkala in their next fixture of the new season. The Caucasus derby will take place at Akhmat Arena on 13 September. The match will kick-off at 14:30.

The upcoming game will be only Stanislav Cherchesov’s second match against Dynamo Makhachkala. Their first encounter took place on 10 May this year and ended in a 1–1 draw.

The match will also mark the third time Stanislav Cherchesov and Vadim Evseev have faced each other.

Their first encounter came as players in 2002. On 12 September 2002, Lokomotiv Moscow and Spartak Moscow drew 1–1, with both Cherchesov and Evseev playing the full 90 minutes. Their second meeting came as coaches in the aforementioned Caucasus derby in May this year.

Cherchesov and Evseev were also briefly teammates at Spartak Moscow in 1993, although Evseev was playing for the club’s youth team at the time.

They also represented the Russian national team together and both took part in the same friendly match on 10 February 1999, when Russia “Blues” defeated Russia “Whites” 4–3 after leading 1–0 at half-time. Evseev played the full 90 minutes for the Whites, while Cherchesov played the first half for the Blues before switching to the Whites for the second half.

Akhmat held to 1-1 draw by Rubin

Rubin and Akhmat shared the points in their Russian Premier League Matchday 7 encounter, which ended 1–1.

Striker Jacques Siwe opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 26th minute. Referee Evgeny Bulanov awarded the spot kick after a VAR intervention and an on-field review, having seen that the ball struck Akhmat defender Kalidou Sidibé on the arm.

— We played twice in Kazan last season—once in the Russian Cup and once in the league. My 200th match as a coach was also against Rubin, a 0–0 draw in Grozny, while my 500th has now ended 1–1 here in Kazan. Hopefully, my 600th will bring a win over Rubin. I liked the way we played. The first half was evenly contested, but in the second we created several clear-cut chances that we should have made more of. I am pleased with the quality of football the team are producing. We came here looking for all three points, but unfortunately, we could not take them. Nevertheless, I thanked the players for a good performance. We responded well after falling behind and had a clear understanding of what we needed to do. We are also looking forward to having our injured players back, as their return will give us more options. That said, everyone who played today gave their all.

— Why were you unable to win?

— We were up against a team who play with great intensity at home, and we did not take our chances. However, I am pleased with the way the team responded to going behind and fought back to equalise.

— Have you noticed any changes in Rubin’s style of play since Franc Artiga replaced Rashid Rakhimov as head coach and Mirlind Daku left the club?

— There are always subtle differences. Grigori Grzhipshi would also have added something to Rubin’s game. Every team relies to some extent on one or two key players—just as Spartak rely on players such as Esequiel Barco and Ruslan Litvinov. Rubin’s basic system remains the same, although it has become more flexible and hybrid in nature. We did not see anything out of the ordinary today. Artiga did a good job at Khimki and is continuing that work here in Kazan. I like him as a coach.

Akhmat suffered a 0–3 defeat against Dynamo Moscow in their third-round match in the RPL Path of the Russian Cup.

Dynamo’s goals were scored by forwards Ivan Sergeyev in the 43rd minute, Yaroslav Gladyshev in the 53rd and Konstantin Tyukavin in the 79th.

Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov answered journalists’ questions at the post-match press conference.

— This was a Russian Cup tie, but I did not see the kind of intensity you would expect from my team in a cup game. I think Dynamo deserved their victory. That said, we could still have taken something from the match. We had chances that might have changed the course of the game, but unfortunately, we failed to convert a couple of clear-cut opportunities. Congratulations to Dynamo—they were the better side today.

— How do you motivate the team for matches like this, given that the competition format makes it relatively difficult to be eliminated at the group stage?

— We were playing a cup tie against Dynamo. We represent Akhmat and have a duty to play for the honour of the club. I told the players after the match that a performance like today’s was unacceptable. I now expect to see a response from them in our upcoming game against Rubin.

— Do you have any particular concerns about your team’s defensive midfield following the goals you conceded?

— We made several similar mistakes against Krylya Sovetov. There are two sides to the game: what we do when we have the ball and what we do when the opposition have it. Our play out of possession was not good enough against either Krylya Sovetov or Dynamo. We give the ball away needlessly, and naturally, our opponents punish us for those mistakes.

— Ismaël was booked almost immediately after coming on...

— That was simply part of the game, not a disciplinary issue. Tactical fouls are common in football, and he should have made a similar foul against Krylya Sovetov. Had he not committed the foul today, I would have criticised him. In that situation, he had no choice but to bring his opponent down.

— We wanted to start the match on the front foot, and we scored a good early goal. After that, however, we drifted away from the kind of football we wanted to play. Although it is impossible to dominate for the entire match, we conceded space and surrendered the initiative to our opponents, and they took advantage of it. At half-time, we discussed what needed to change and how we should approach the second half. From the opening minutes of the second half, I had a clear idea of what needed to be changed. As the match progressed, we brought on fresh players who strengthened our performance and helped us see the game through to victory.

— For the second match in succession, the team have opened the scoring with an early goal. Would you say that this works in your favour?

— Nobody knows in advance how things will unfold. We are obviously pleased when it happens, but we then need to build on that advantage. Against Fakel, we played the entire first half as planned, whereas today we did not. Perhaps the weather was more humid today, which prevented us from playing at the same tempo.

— Did Rostov surprise you in any way today?

— They did not surprise us, just as we did not surprise them, for that matter. Everything we had prepared for was evident in their play: they are disciplined, they drop back, they like to press and pose a threat from set pieces. Our matches against Rostov are always fiercely contested, but today it ended 4–1. We can only be pleased with that, particularly because Rostov had been producing some good performances before playing us.

— Has the team now fully switched to a system with three centre-backs?

— That is how we start matches, but we then make adjustments. It can be difficult to establish a rhythm against Rostov, and sometimes you have to mirror their system. At 1–1, we had to change our shape and take risks. I do not particularly like playing with this system myself, but as you can see, sometimes I have to go against my own preferences.

— How useful is Ibishev under this system, both as a centre-back and, in a different formation, as a midfielder?

— Whenever possible, I always try to ensure that every player can operate in several positions so that we can change our system without making a substitution. I am pleased that Ibishev is scoring and helping the team. I hope he receives another call-up to the Russian national team.

— How important was it to win on such a significant day for the republic?

— Victory is always important, but it was particularly important today, on the 75th anniversary of the birth of the great historical figure Akhmat-Haji Kadyrov. On the eve of the match, we visited the museum dedicated to him, and we were deeply impressed by the scale of his personality and legacy. On this special occasion, we wanted to achieve a positive result and bring joy to the people of the republic. We are delighted that we were able to make the entire Chechen nation happy on this day.

Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov answered journalists’ questions at the post-match press conference:

— We have now played three league matches as well as the cup game against Krasnodar. In two of our away games, in Moscow and Krasnodar, we came from behind. We didn't deserve to lose in Krasnodar and played some good football there. Here in Voronezh, we drew against a good team. I wouldn't say there was anything we set out to do that we failed to achieve. Another positive is that we kept a clean sheet against Fakel. Now we need to start scoring goals.

We wanted to win our opening matches of the season and had chances to do so. I'm pleased with the way the team played today and fought for this draw, because it's never easy for anyone in Voronezh. I like the team's attitude, although there were situations where our players could have made better use of their chances.

— How significant is Egas Kasintura's absence?

— Every player who plays an important role in our game is important to us. The fact is that he's unavailable because of suspension. Egas will also miss the game in Krasnodar. Today we were counting on Shchetinin, who needed a little time to get into the game. His performances in the last two matches have certainly been a positive. Kirill needs time, even though he has already played at this level. It will also be important to see how this enforced break following his red card affects Kasintura.

— How different is today's Fakel from the team you saw during the winter training camp in Türkiye?

— The team was always going to be different. A training camp is a training camp. There are things you simply can't compare: the players may be the same, but the way the team plays can be completely different. Today Fakel were up for the fight and determined to win. But my players did everything we asked of them except one thing: score a goal. I think a draw was a fair result.

Akhmat suffer 2-1 defeat to Spartak Moscow

Akhmat were beaten 2–1 by Spartak Moscow in their Russian Premier League Round 2 fixture.

The hosts took the lead in the 5th minute when Egash Kasintura calmly converted a penalty. Referee Anton Frolov awarded the spot-kick after Christopher Wu handled the ball following an Akhmat goal kick. Spartak restored parity in the 39th minute through Wu, before Esequiel Barco curled home a stoppage-time free-kick in the 90+1st minute to seal all three points for the visitors.

After the match, Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov spoke to the media at the post-match press conference.

— It was a proper game of football. We took the lead and nothing changed in terms of our approach — we stuck to the game plan throughout. I cannot even recall a genuine scoring opportunity for our opponents, apart from the effort that struck the crossbar towards the end. We carried out our plan and played the way we wanted. The only disappointment was that we failed to turn our promising situations into shots on goal. Our opponents scored twice from two set pieces.

— Do you agree with the referee's decision to send off Egash Kasintura?

— If the referee showed a red card, then he must have seen something. The only thing that concerns me is why it takes five or ten minutes to review a dismissal.

— Did you speak to Giorgi Shelia after the late goal?

— I thanked him and the team for their performance. I told everyone to focus on preparing for our next match, which is already in two days.

The hosts took the lead in the eighth minute through Zelimkhan Bakayev. Akhmat equalised seven minutes from time, with substitute Erald Maksuti finding the back of the net.

Akhmat head coach Stanislav Cherchesov spoke to the media after the match.

— We did not start the game well, and it was not a matter of our approach, but of a mistake that led to a goal out of nothing. We reorganised in the first half and wanted to score, and at half-time we changed a few things. In the end, we came away with a draw. Both we and our opponents wanted to win. The score is there on the scoreboard.

— How satisfied were you with the debuts of the team's new signings?

— Adamov and Shchetinin are not newcomers to the Russian Premier League. Maksuti came off the bench and scored—that is exactly why we signed him. The first competitive match after pre-season is never easy for any club. I saw a real battle out there from both teams.

— Did the impact of your substitutions change your thinking about what your starting line-up should look like this season?

— We do not look at it that way. We have a match against Spartak coming up, and we need to analyse it first. We also need to see what shape we are in going into that game. I am pleased with Melkadze's commitment—he works hard and puts the team first. Of course, there were aerial duels he needed to win. But before making any decisions, we need to assess the condition of the entire squad ahead of the Spartak match.

— What enabled your team to turn the game around?

— The players know themselves what they were doing wrong. There was no emotional dressing-down from me at half-time, but there were certain things they needed to be reminded of, and we addressed them. I saw the work we put in throughout all three training camps, and I know the level of our preparation. I was not surprised by the way we improved in the second half. That said, I have only seen the first signs of what we have been working on. I still need to think about how we can make this team even stronger.

— Did conceding an early goal force you to change your game plan?

— We were not charging forward even before the goal. Football is all about organisation. I told the players that under no circumstances should they abandon the game plan after going 1–0 down. In the end, it paid off, although we would have liked to go on and snatch the winner.

— How long had you been monitoring Maksuti, and what qualities convinced you to sign him?

— We work in football, so we know what is happening and where. I do not need to watch a player for very long. If a player has the right qualities, you see them straight away. Erald is a young player. Clubs in Italy were interested in him as well, but he chose to join us.

— Given your team's second-half performance, are you satisfied with the result?

— You always want to win. Lokomotiv are a strong side, but I also believe we were the better team in both meetings with them last season.

Head coach Stanislav Cherchesov shared his thoughts after the match and answered questions from journalists at the post-match press conference:

— We expected a tough game — Baltika are never an easy opponent. Credit to the players, we carried out our game plan. We conceded a soft goal and had to adjust. We then switched systems, it worked, and we got back into the game. We pushed for a winner right until the final whistle, but it ended 1–1.

— Did the lessons learned from the winter training camp match against Baltika prove useful?

— We also played them away earlier in the season. Naturally, there are always certain adjustments and nuances, and we saw that again today.

— How would you assess the team’s performance after the tactical switch?

— It wasn’t the first time we made that change. We did the same in the second-round match against Rubin, and it worked well then, just as it did today.

— What can you say about Ibishev’s performance after returning to the starting line-up?

— We evaluate the team as a whole rather than focusing on individuals. Turpal-Ali did well, and it’s no coincidence that the goal came through his involvement. We’ll analyse his performance in detail — there are always positives and areas to improve. Overall, we’re pleased with the team: after the Spartak game, we showed strong character and a real fighting spirit.

— Is there extra motivation to influence the title race in the upcoming match against Zenit?

— Our motivation is always the same — to improve with every game and finish the season on a strong note. Of course, ahead of the Zenit match there are certain aspects we need to work on, and we’ll do everything we can to address them.
